氷蓮図と坐辺師友

シーズン・ラオの世界観は「間」と「余白」に特徴付けられる。彼の作品は水墨画を想起させる様相で、手漉き紙の上に現代の実風景からとらえた景色が表されている。墨の付いていない余白の部分に奥行きを想像する精神性は、東洋美術の真髄の一つと言える。氷蓮図に表された、凍っている蓮の氷下で生命力が作る余白。この「間」は目に見えるものの奥にある精神性を想起させ、次元、時空を超えた東洋美術の精神性を体感できる場所となる。

茶会においては、どの茶器をとっても、それらがいかに名品であろうとも、それらは主役ではない。あくまでもその茶に興じる人々が主役である。坐辺師友という言葉がある。これは北大路魯山人の言葉で、美しい物々は心を育み、慰め、また導いてくれる師であり、友であるという意味であるが、茶室という空間 において孤独に諸々の作品と対峙するとよく解される。
この世界観には、時空を超越した作品同士の共鳴と対話がある。その作者が故人であろうと遠くに居ようと、作品は現にあり精神はそこにある。そして鑑賞者の精神もその一部となり、いかに孤独な空間に居ても、歴史的に接続して共に存在していることが自覚できるのである。

現在のコロナ禍において制限される中で、心の在処に対する一つの提案となることを願う展示である。

LOTUSES and Zahen Shiyu

The worldview of Season Lao is characterized by “intervals” and “blank spaces.” His work has a modality that calls ink paintings to mind, and a landscape that has been portrayed from modern real landscapes is painted on hand-made paper. The spirituality to imagine profoundness in blank spaces without ink can be considered an essence of Asian art. Blank spaces are created by vital power under the ice of the frozen lotus expressed in the frozen lotus painting. These “intervals” call to mind the spirituality beyond what can be seen with the eyes and serve as places where the spirituality of Asian art that goes beyond time, space, and dimensions can be experienced with the senses.

During tea ceremonies, the tea sets do not play the lead role, no matter which tea sets are used, even if they are masterpieces. Only the people who enjoy the tea play the lead role. There is a phrase called Zahen Shiyu. This was Kitaoji Rosanjin’s motto and means “beautiful things are teachers and friends that nurture the heart, give comfort, and provide guidance.” However, it is frequently interpreted as confronting various works alone in the space of a tea ceremony room.
In this world view, there is resonance and dialogue between the works that go beyond space and time. Even if the creator is deceased or far away, the work is present, and the spirit is there. Then, the spirit of the appreciator also takes part, making it possible to gain the awareness of connecting historically and existing together, no matter how lonesome the space is.

This exhibition hopes to serve as a proposal for the location of the heart, as we currently face restrictions due to the coronavirus.
